Vitamins are involved in many metabolic processes in our body. It is widely known that they strengthen the immune system or play an important role in building bones.
However, vitamins – or in particular a lack of vitamin B and D – can also cause sleep problems. Vitamin C can also influence our sleeping behaviour due to its effect on blood sugar levels. This article addresses vitamins that are important for healthy and restorative sleep and explains them in more detail, as well as the processes for which they are responsible.
Vitamin D
Summer: blue sky, a lot of sunshine, fresh air and balmy evenings. We love this – and so does our body, because it can absorb a lot of vitamin D3 through the abundance of sunlight. It is precisely this vitamin that we are lacking in the winter months, making us lethargic and tired. Experts therefore recommend takin additional vitamin D in the form of a supplement.
Vitamin B
Vitamin B influences the nervous and energy balance in our body. In total there are 8 B vitamins, which are also known under the synonym vitamin B complex.
- Thiamin (B1)
- Riboflavin (B2)
- Niacin (B3)
- Pantothenic acid (B5)
- Pyridoxine (B6)
- Biotin (B7)
- Folic acid (B9)
- Cobalamin (B12)
The majority of this vitamin group is responsible for energy metabolism in the body. Vitamin B12 is also involved in the production of the sleep hormones melatonin and serotonin. If our body does not have an adequate supply, it can result in tiredness, a lack of drive or lethargy. Nervous system disturbances can also occur.

Vitamin C and blood sugar
Apart from vitamin B, vitamin C can also have a significant influence on blood sugar. People with diabetes also use vitamin C to reduce the blood sugar level. In general, the wrong diet and not enough rest or sleep lead to a rise in blood sugar, compromising the immune system.
